Seat Horizontal Forward/Rearward Potentiometer Feedback Circuit Short To Battery

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read the slide position feedback voltage in live data and compare it with the other seat sensors

What does it mean?

B1964 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Seat Horizontal Forward/Rearward Position Feedback Circuit Short to Battery .

Symptoms

  • Seat does not slide, or moves in one direction only
  • Memory recall never reaches the stored fore and aft position
  • Slide stops shortly after starting and requires the switch to be released
  • Easy entry and exit movement no longer works
  • Height and recline still operate normally, showing the fault is limited to one circuit

Likely causes

  • Feedback wire rubbed through against a slide motor feed in the under seat loom
  • Harness dragged along the floor and crushed by the seat rails at the end of travel
  • Liquid spillage or damp carpet corroding the slide potentiometer connector and bridging feed to signal
  • Slide position potentiometer failed with an internal short to its supply
  • Connector at the slide motor assembly damaged, wet or partly unlatched
  • Damage caused by items pushed under the seat, or by an aftermarket accessory installation
  • Sensor supply output fault inside the seat control module

How to fix it

  1. Read the slide position feedback voltage in live data and compare it with the other seat sensors
  2. Disconnect the slide potentiometer, a signal that drops to zero proves an internal short, one that stays high points at the wiring
  3. With the seat module disconnected too, check the signal wire for battery voltage and for continuity to any motor feed
  4. Run the seat fully forwards and rearwards while watching the value, spikes reveal a wire being crushed at a particular position
  5. Inspect the loom under the seat and along the rails for chafe, crush marks, corrosion and spillage
  6. Repair the harness, or fit a new potentiometer or slide motor assembly if the sensor is shorted
  7. Clear the code, cycle the seat through full travel and store and recall a memory position to confirm the fix
