What does it mean?
C1213 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Short to Ground .
Symptoms
- ABS lamp on at key-on and staying on, with the stability control lamp
- No valve relay click during the key-on self test
- ABS, traction and stability control fully disabled while normal hydraulic braking remains
- ABS supply fuse blowing repeatedly on some vehicles
- Code sets again immediately after clearing, with no road test needed
Likely causes
- Relay control wire chafed through against a bracket, body seam or engine mount and touching bare metal
- Water and road salt in the relay socket or in the ABS module connector bridging a pin to ground
- Relay coil shorted internally so the control line sits at ground potential
- Harness pinched or trapped during hydraulic unit, battery tray or engine work
- Corroded splice or damaged insulation where the harness passes near the hydraulic unit
- Low side driver in the ABS module shorted internally
How to fix it
- Check the ABS supply and valve fuses before anything else and note whether one has blown
- Unplug the relay and the ABS module, then measure resistance from the control terminal to ground; a very low reading confirms the short
- Follow the harness along the strut tower, frame rail and hydraulic unit bracket looking for rub-through and pinch damage
- Open, dry and clean the relay socket or fuse box and check for corrosion bridging the pins
- Measure the relay coil resistance out of circuit and compare with specification
- Repair or re-route the damaged harness section and re-protect it with loom and tape
- Only after the wiring is proven good, consider the module, since the valve relay is built into it on many units
