What does it mean?
C1214 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Open . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- ABS warning lamp on from key-on, with traction and stability lamps
- Valve relay does not click and the usual key-on hydraulic unit self test is silent
- ABS never activates during hard braking, so wheels can lock on loose or wet surfaces
- Stability control, hill-hold and trailer assist all unavailable
- Code stores again on the next key cycle straight away
Likely causes
- Blown ABS valve supply fuse, or a fuse with a cracked element that only reads open under load
- Relay coil open internally, or the relay not seated in its socket
- Spread, burnt or backed-out terminal in the relay socket or the ABS module connector
- Broken control or feed wire between the module and the relay, often at a harness bend or after body repair
- Corroded or loose ABS ground point, which the module reads as an open control path
- Internal driver in the ABS module failed open
How to fix it
- Check the ABS main and valve fuses with a meter under load rather than by eye
- Confirm the relay is fully seated, then measure its coil resistance out of circuit
- Check for battery voltage at the relay feed terminal with the key on
- Test continuity of the control wire between the relay socket and the ABS module connector
- Inspect module and relay terminals for spread pins, burn marks and corrosion, and check terminal tension
- Voltage drop test the ABS power feed and ground while the system is commanded on
- Repair the open circuit; if wiring, fuse, relay and grounds all pass, the module with its internal relay is the remaining candidate
