What does it mean?

C1221 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Manufacturer-Specific Chassis/ABS Fault .

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp lit continuously, including when the system reports no other fault
  • Lamp does not follow the normal key-on self test sequence and never goes out after starting
  • Lamp may stay on even with the ABS module connector unplugged
  • Stability and traction warnings may also be displayed
  • Vehicle can fail a roadworthiness inspection for a permanently lit brake system lamp

Likely causes

  • Lamp control wire between the ABS module and the instrument cluster chafed against body metal
  • Water or corrosion in the cluster connector bridging the lamp circuit to ground
  • Harness pinched behind the dashboard after audio, heater or airbag work
  • Non standard bulb or a retrofitted LED with the wrong current draw on the lamp circuit
  • Added accessory wiring tapped into the warning lamp circuit
  • Lamp driver inside the ABS module shorted internally

How to fix it

  1. Watch the lamp through a key-on cycle and note whether it performs the normal bulb check
  2. Unplug the ABS module connector; if the lamp still lights, the fault is in the wiring or the cluster, not the module
  3. Measure resistance from the lamp control wire to ground with both ends disconnected
  4. Inspect the harness behind the dashboard and along the bulkhead for rub-through and trapped sections
  5. Check the cluster connector for moisture, corrosion and pushed back terminals
  6. Remove any aftermarket wiring or non standard bulb from the circuit and retest
  7. Repair the shorted wire; replace the module only if its output stays grounded with the harness disconnected
