What does it mean?
C1227 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Open . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- ABS and stability lamps on from the moment the key is turned
- No relay click and no hydraulic unit self test noise at key-on or when pulling away
- ABS never operates, so wheels lock under hard braking on slippery surfaces
- Hill-hold and traction control unavailable
- Fault present in every key cycle without any road test
Likely causes
- Open circuit in the relay control wire, often at a harness bend, a repaired splice or a connector that has been disturbed
- Relay coil open, or the relay only partly seated in its socket
- Blown or cracked fuse feeding the valve supply
- Backed-out or corroded terminal in the ABS module connector
- Broken solder joint or open track inside the ABS module where the relay is integrated
- Poor ABS ground connection that makes the control loop read as open
How to fix it
- Test the ABS and valve supply fuses with a meter, not visually
- Check the relay is fully seated and measure its coil resistance out of circuit
- Confirm battery voltage reaches the relay supply terminal with the key on
- Check continuity of the control wire from the module connector to the relay socket, wiggling the harness while measuring
- Inspect module and relay terminals for corrosion, spread pins and lost tension
- Clean and retighten the ABS ground point and voltage drop test it
- Repair the open circuit and retest; if fuse, relay, wiring and grounds are all good, the module holding the internal relay is the remaining candidate
