  • 2Chassis / ABS
  • 23Sequence number

What does it mean?

C1223 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Control System Malfunction . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • ABS lamp on with the stability lamp, and on many vehicles the brake warning lamp as well
  • Anti lock function completely unavailable; the brakes work but the wheels can lock
  • Longer stopping distances on wet, loose or icy surfaces
  • Hill-hold, brake assist and traction control features all switched off
  • Scan tool may lose communication with the ABS module or report several codes together
  • Code returns immediately after clearing

Likely causes

  • Weak battery, failing alternator or low system voltage during cranking
  • Corroded or loose ABS module connector, or moisture that has entered the module housing
  • Poor or corroded ABS ground point on the body or gearbox
  • Solenoid valve coil failure inside the hydraulic unit
  • Several sensor or actuator faults stored at once, which the module reports as a system malfunction
  • Software or configuration not completed after module, battery or hydraulic unit replacement
  • Internal electronic failure of the control module itself

How to fix it

  1. Test the battery under load and check charging voltage before diagnosing the module
  2. Check the ABS fuses, relays and grounds, and clean and retorque the main ground point
  3. Read all stored codes in the module and address the specific ones before treating this as an internal failure
  4. Voltage drop test the module power feed and ground while the system is active
  5. Inspect the module connector for water, corrosion, spread terminals and brake fluid ingress
  6. Command the pump and valve self test with the scan tool and listen for correct operation
  7. Repair or replace the control module as the final step, and complete the required coding and bleed procedure
