What does it mean?
C1268 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Warning Lamp Request . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- ABS warning lamp stays on continuously
- Traction and stability lamps often lit at the same time
- ABS may still work or may be fully disabled depending on the underlying fault
- Normal service braking usually unaffected
- A brake system message may appear in the driver display
Likely causes
- Another ABS or stability system fault stored in the module that has commanded the warning lamp on
- Wheel speed sensor, valve solenoid or pump motor fault that has already disabled ABS
- Low system voltage making the module shut ABS down and request the lamp
- Fault in the lamp request message between the ABS module and the instrument cluster on the data bus
- Instrument cluster fault recording or displaying a lamp request that was never sent
- History entry left behind after an earlier fault was repaired but the codes were not cleared
How to fix it
- Scan every module and record all codes; this entry is a lamp request, so the real fault is normally stored alongside it
- Diagnose and repair any wheel speed sensor, valve, pump or supply voltage codes first
- Test the battery and charging system under load, since low voltage alone can trigger the request
- If no other fault is stored, check bus communication between the ABS module and the cluster
- Clear the codes, complete a full drive cycle and see which code returns first
- Look at the cluster or the lamp driver only when the ABS module itself reports no fault while the lamp stays on
