What does it mean?
C1272 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: LF Speed Output . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- ABS and stability lamps on with those functions switched off
- Left front wheel speed missing or unstable in live data while the other three read correctly
- Unexpected ABS activation at walking pace, sometimes with a grinding feel at the pedal
- Speedometer or trip computer misbehaving on vehicles that use this output
- Cruise control and hill start assist unavailable
Likely causes
- Faulty left front wheel speed sensor or contamination on the sensing face
- Damaged or rusted left front tone ring, or one that has moved on the hub
- Air gap out of specification because of a worn bearing or an incorrectly seated sensor
- Harness damage on the left front corner, commonly where the loom flexes with the steering and suspension
- Water in the connector inside the wheel arch
- Open or shorted wheel speed output circuit between the ABS module and the receiving module
- ABS control module output fault
How to fix it
- Compare all four wheel speeds during a road test and confirm which corner drops out
- Inspect the sensor, its mounting and the harness routing through the strut and wheel liner
- Pull the sensor, clean metal debris off the tip and check the tone ring through a full wheel rotation
- Check for bearing play and confirm the sensor is seated fully in its bore
- Test the sensor circuit for open, short to ground and short to voltage at the module connector
- Perform a wiggle test at full steering lock in both directions while watching live data
- Renew the sensor, tone ring or bearing assembly as required, then verify all four speeds track together
