What does it mean?
C1415 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Transfer Case Motor Current Performance .
Symptoms
- Four wheel drive service message, or mode indicator lights that flash and never settle
- Range change is refused and the system stays in the last engaged mode
- Motor is heard whirring under the vehicle but no range change follows
- Grinding or clunking noise during an attempted shift
- Selector switch requests are ignored, sometimes only when hot or cold
Likely causes
- Binding or seized shift motor and encoder assembly on the transfer case
- Worn or dirty encoder contact plate reporting a false shift position
- Mechanical binding inside the transfer case: shift fork, sector shaft or a worn range clutch
- Low, dirty or wrong specification transfer case fluid increasing shift effort
- High resistance in the motor feed or ground caused by a corroded underbody connector
- Weak battery or a heavy voltage drop while the motor runs
- Failed output driver in the transfer case shift control module
How to fix it
- Check battery condition and voltage drop on the main grounds first
- Read shift motor position and encoder values on live data while requesting a mode change
- Inspect the motor connector under the vehicle for water, corrosion and damaged pins
- Measure voltage at the motor while it is commanded and perform a voltage drop test on the ground side
- Check transfer case fluid level and condition
- Command the motor with a bidirectional scan tool and watch current draw and travel time
- Remove the motor and check that the shift shaft turns freely by hand, then inspect the encoder contact plate
- Replace the motor and encoder assembly, or repair the transfer case internals when the binding is mechanical
