What does it mean?
C1512 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Torque Sensor Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Steering assist reduced or switched off, sometimes only after a few minutes of driving
- Steering warning lamp on and a message in the cluster
- Assist level changes unexpectedly, feeling light then heavy
- Steering may pull or self centre poorly
- Fault often returns after the same manoeuvre, such as full lock parking
Likely causes
- Drifted or failed sensor element, so the main and redundant signals no longer match
- Sensor never zeroed after the steering column, rack or control module was replaced
- Damaged wiring or a corroded connector affecting one of the two signal lines
- Water inside the sensor housing after a leak into the footwell or column area
- Poor ground or unstable reference voltage causing one signal to shift
- Mechanical wear or play in the torsion bar assembly
- Software or configuration mismatch between the steering module and the sensor
How to fix it
- Read both torque sensor values on live data with the steering at rest; they should agree and sit near zero
- Apply light effort in each direction and confirm both signals move together and symmetrically
- Inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, damage and moisture
- Measure reference voltage and ground at the sensor, then check both signal wires for opens and shorts
- Check for play in the steering column and torsion bar assembly
- Perform the torque sensor zero calibration and verify the values afterwards
- Replace the sensor or steering assembly if the two signals still disagree with good wiring, then recalibrate
