What does it mean?
C1513 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Torque Sensor Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Steering assist drops out briefly and then returns
- Steering warning lamp comes on intermittently, sometimes clearing itself
- Heavy steering at parking speeds while highway steering feels normal
- Fault more common in cold or wet conditions
- Torque value on live data jumps or flatlines while turning
Likely causes
- Broken conductor inside the sensor harness that only opens with vibration or steering movement
- Corroded or spread terminals in the sensor connector giving high resistance
- Chafed harness at the column or bulkhead grommet where it rubs during steering
- Failed torque sensor element that loses output when it heats up
- Voltage supply problem: weak battery, poor ground or a loose main earth
- Sensor calibration lost after a battery disconnect or module replacement
- Moisture in the connector causing signals to drift in wet weather
How to fix it
- Check battery voltage, main grounds and terminal tightness first
- Monitor the torque sensor value while turning the wheel slowly and while wiggling the harness
- Inspect the connector at the column or steering gear for corrosion, moisture and loose terminals
- Perform a voltage drop test on the sensor supply and ground under load
- Check the harness where it passes through grommets and moves with the column
- Repair or reroute damaged wiring and reseal the connector
- Replace the sensor or steering assembly if the signal still drops with proven good wiring, then run the calibration
