What does it mean?
P1153 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: HO2S-21 (Bank 2 Sensor 1) Insufficient Switching .
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on while the engine still drives acceptably
- Fuel consumption climbing and fuel trims drifting on the Bank 2 side
- Slightly uneven idle and mild hesitation under light throttle
- Stronger exhaust odour than usual
- Catalyst monitor for that bank never completing
Likely causes
- Aged sensor element on the Bank 2 side with a lazy, shallow signal
- Contamination of the element by coolant, silicone or heavy oil consumption
- Exhaust leak in the Bank 2 manifold or its gasket, adding fresh air ahead of the sensor
- Vacuum or intake leak affecting only that bank
- Weak sensor heater so the element stays too cool at idle and light load
- Fuel delivery imbalance on Bank 2 from dirty injectors or uneven rail pressure
- High resistance in the sensor signal or ground circuit damping the voltage swing
How to fix it
- Identify Bank 2 for the engine layout, then graph its front sensor at a steady 2500 rpm and count the crossings
- Compare the Bank 1 and Bank 2 sensor traces side by side; the healthy bank gives you a reference
- Force rich with propane and lean with a controlled air leak, and time how quickly the sensor follows
- Inspect the Bank 2 exhaust manifold, gasket and pipe joints ahead of the sensor for leaks
- Smoke test the intake and check fuel pressure and injector condition on that bank
- Verify heater supply and heater resistance on the Bank 2 front sensor
- Replace the sensor with the correct part once air, fuel and exhaust check good, then confirm the switching rate
