What does it mean?
P1156 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: HO2S Heater Circuit Current Malfunction-Circuit Continuity .
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on soon after start-up
- The affected sensor stays cold, so closed loop entry is delayed
- Poor fuel economy and slightly unsettled running while cold
- Fault often appearing right after exhaust or suspension work
- Readiness monitors not completing
Likely causes
- Broken heater element inside the sensor, giving an infinite resistance reading
- Snapped or corroded wire in the heater feed or return, often at a previous repair joint
- Terminal backed out of the connector body so it no longer contacts the mating pin
- Connector not fully latched after earlier work on the exhaust or suspension
- Fuse blown or a fuse holder with a broken internal contact
- Ground eyelet loose, painted over or corroded at the body attachment
- Harness pulled and stretched during exhaust service, breaking a conductor inside the insulation
How to fix it
- Measure resistance across the heater pins at the sensor; an open reading confirms a broken element
- If the element is good, check continuity of the feed and return wires from the sensor to the fuse and to the module
- Inspect the connector for a terminal that has pushed back, and verify the lock tab is fully engaged
- Check the fuse with a meter rather than by eye, and test its holder for a broken contact
- Trace the harness for pull damage, stretched sections and old repair joints, especially near recent service areas
- Clean and retighten the heater ground eyelet, removing paint under the contact face
- Repair the open circuit or replace the sensor if the element is broken, then confirm the heater draws current normally
