What does it mean?
P1193 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Intake Air Temperature Sensor Circuit High Input .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Engine runs rich because the module fuels for very cold air, often with black smoke
- Rough idle, hesitation and reduced power
- Poor fuel economy and a strong exhaust smell
- Intake air temperature on the scan tool stays at the extreme low end regardless of conditions
- Hard starting when the engine is hot
Likely causes
- Open circuit in the signal or ground wire between the sensor and the module
- Sensor connector unplugged, not latched, or a terminal backed out
- Internal open in the temperature sensing element
- Corroded, dry or spread terminals raising circuit resistance
- Signal wire shorted to the reference or to battery voltage
- Damaged harness after air box or intake work
- Rarely, a control module input fault
How to fix it
- Read intake air temperature in live data; a value pinned at the coldest end points straight to an open circuit
- Check the sensor connector is fully seated and no terminal has pushed back
- Unplug the sensor and jumper the two harness pins together; if the reading swings to the hot end, the wiring is good and the sensor is open
- Measure the sensor's resistance and compare it with the temperature-resistance table
- Check continuity of both wires back to the module and test for a short to voltage
- Repair the open wire or corroded terminal and protect the connection
- Replace the sensor if it measures open, then verify the reading tracks ambient temperature after a cold soak
