Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Listen for pump prime and read fuel rail pressure to confirm the pump really is dead

What does it mean?

P1206 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Fuel Pump Control Module Open Circuit To Fuel Pump .

Symptoms

  • Cranks but does not start, or starts and stalls straight away
  • No pump prime sound from the tank when the ignition is switched on
  • Zero or rapidly falling fuel rail pressure
  • Intermittent stalling that is worse over bumps and rough roads
  • Check engine lamp on with additional fuel pressure or lean mixture codes

Likely causes

  • Broken or corroded wire between the control module and the pump, often near the tank straps or a body pass-through
  • Corroded or burnt terminals in the pump flange connector on top of the tank
  • Open winding or worn brushes inside the pump motor itself
  • Tripped inertia or fuel cut-off switch, or an inline connector that has separated
  • Poor pump ground at the flange or at the body stud
  • Module output stage no longer able to drive the circuit

How to fix it

  1. Listen for pump prime and read fuel rail pressure to confirm the pump really is dead
  2. Back-probe the pump connector at the tank while cranking to see whether supply and drive signal arrive
  3. Voltage drop test the pump ground path
  4. Check continuity of both wires from the module connector through to the pump connector
  5. Inspect the flange connector for melted plastic and corroded pins, a very common source of the open
  6. If supply and ground reach the pump but it does not run, renew the pump assembly
  7. If the drive signal never leaves the module and the wiring is proven good, replace the module
