What does it mean?
P1221 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Excessive Cycling of Reductant Pump Inlet Defrosting .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on with reductant system warnings, typically in cold weather
- Message that reductant dosing is unavailable until the system thaws
- Countdown warning towards a speed limit or a restart restriction
- Reduced power once the derate begins
- Heater or coolant valve heard cycling repeatedly after a cold start
- Fault disappears in warm weather and returns in winter
Likely causes
- Failed or intermittent inlet heater element
- Coolant shut-off valve for the reductant heating circuit stuck closed, so warm coolant never reaches the pump
- Low coolant level or air trapped in the heating loop
- Temperature sensor in the reductant circuit reading incorrectly and cycling the heater
- Frozen or slushy fluid because the vehicle has stood in low ambient temperatures
- Damaged heater wiring, corroded connector or a poor ground
- Aftertreatment control module output fault or outdated software
How to fix it
- Note the ambient temperature in the freeze frame, because a genuine frozen system behaves differently from an electrical fault
- Check coolant level and bleed the heating circuit; a low system will never warm the pump inlet
- Command the coolant shut-off valve with the scan tool and feel for a temperature change in the hose
- Measure the inlet heater resistance and its supply voltage and ground while commanded on
- Compare reductant temperature readings with the actual component temperature
- Inspect the heater connector for water intrusion, corrosion and green terminals
- Renew the failed heater, valve or sensor, then let the system complete a thaw cycle and confirm the cycling has stopped
- Check for aftertreatment software updates before replacing the pump assembly
