What does it mean?
P1223 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Injection Control Circuit Commanded State to Actual State Mismatch .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on, often with additional injection or fuel system codes
- Hard starting, extended cranking or an intermittent no-start
- Misfire, rough running and hesitation under load
- Engine cutting out and restarting without warning
- Reduced power or limp mode with poor throttle response
Likely causes
- Open, shorted or high resistance wiring in the injection control circuit
- Corroded connector or a loose terminal at the injector, the relay or the control module
- Failed control relay or a driver output that no longer switches cleanly
- Poor ground for the module or for the injection components, shifting the feedback voltage
- Component such as an injector or solenoid with a winding out of specification
- Low system voltage from a weak battery or charging fault, so the circuit never reaches the commanded state
- Internal module failure in the driver or feedback stage
How to fix it
- Record the freeze frame and note whether the mismatch happens at start-up, at idle or under load
- Check battery and charging voltage first, since low voltage alone can cause a commanded state to fail
- Use the scan tool to command the circuit and watch the feedback value change, or fail to change
- Voltage drop test the supply and ground of the circuit while it is commanded on
- Inspect the connectors at the component, the relay and the module for corrosion and spread terminals
- Measure component resistance and compare it with specification and with similar components
- Repair the wiring or replace the faulty component, then clear the codes and confirm the feedback follows the command
- Consider a module fault only after the circuit and the components have been proven
