What does it mean?
P1222 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor ‘E’ Circuit Low Input .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on and the vehicle drops into limp mode
- Sharply reduced power, sometimes only idle speed available
- No response or delayed response when the pedal is pressed
- Cruise control disabled and idle speed possibly raised
- Fault can appear when the pedal is moved through a particular part of its travel
Likely causes
- Signal wire shorted to ground or chafed against the bodywork behind the pedal box
- Open or missing 5 volt reference to the pedal sensor
- Worn internal track or failed hall element in the pedal position sensor
- Water or drink spillage into the pedal connector, a common cause in the footwell
- Loose, corroded or pushed-back terminals in the sensor connector
- Damaged sensor input inside the module
- Floor mat or carpet trapping the pedal and stressing the harness
How to fix it
- Graph both pedal signals on the scan tool and press the pedal slowly through its full travel, watching for a dropout
- Measure the 5 volt reference and sensor ground at the pedal connector with the ignition on
- Inspect the connector and the footwell for moisture, corrosion and terminal damage
- Check the signal wire for continuity to the module and for a short to ground
- Wiggle the harness behind the pedal while watching live data
- Renew the pedal position sensor assembly once wiring, reference and ground test correct, then relearn the pedal if required
- Check the module input as the final step
