Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read freeze frame first and note engine speed, load and temperature at the moment the fault set, then check for related fuel delivery or driver module codes

  • PPowertrain
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 2Powertrain (Other)
  • 44Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1244 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Injection Control Circuit Commanded State to Actual State Mismatch .

Symptoms

  • The MIL is on and the code is stored together with freeze frame data
  • Hard starting or long cranking, especially when the engine is cold
  • Rough idle, stumble and hesitation when accelerating
  • Clear loss of power, often with the engine dropping into limp mode
  • Excess smoke or a strong fuel smell on diesel applications
  • Occasional stalling at idle or when coming to a stop

Likely causes

  • Open circuit or high resistance in the injection control solenoid wiring between the module and the actuator
  • Chafed harness shorting the control line to ground or to battery voltage
  • Corroded, oil-soaked or water-damaged connector at the injection control device or driver module
  • Injection control solenoid or regulator with an open, shorted or out-of-spec winding
  • Faulty injector driver module, or a weak power feed and ground supplying it
  • Poor engine-to-body ground or low system voltage upsetting the feedback signal
  • Failed PCM output driver, confirmed only after the wiring and the actuator have been checked

How to fix it

  1. Read freeze frame first and note engine speed, load and temperature at the moment the fault set, then check for related fuel delivery or driver module codes
  2. Visually inspect the injection control harness and connectors for chafing, oil intrusion, green terminals or spread pins
  3. Use a scan tool to compare the commanded state with the actual state on live data while the fault is present
  4. Back-probe the control circuit and measure voltage and current with the output commanded on and off
  5. Measure the solenoid or actuator winding resistance and its insulation to ground, comparing with specification
  6. Voltage drop test the power feed and ground of the driver module under load
  7. Repair the wiring or replace the confirmed faulty actuator or driver module, then clear the code and verify the commanded and actual states now agree
