Cylinder 6 Knock Control Limit Attained

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Record the freeze frame, then check whether the fault appears only at certain rpm ranges, which hints at induced noise rather than a dead sensor

  • 30Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1330 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Knock Sensor 3 Signal High Input .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on and a stored fault that often returns during acceleration
  • Persistent timing retard, so the engine feels flat and sluggish even when it sounds healthy
  • Increased fuel consumption and slower response when overtaking
  • On some engines a rough or slightly unstable feel under mid-range load
  • Additional knock-related codes for the same bank may appear

Likely causes

  • Signal wire chafed against a live circuit or shorted to voltage inside a damaged connector
  • Knock sensor 3 over-torqued or its mounting bolt bottoming out, which distorts the piezo element and inflates output
  • Sensor harness routed too close to ignition coils or plug leads, picking up induced noise
  • Internal short in the sensor, sending a permanently high level to the module
  • Genuine mechanical noise near the sensor mount: a loose accessory bracket, a worn belt tensioner or a rattling heat shield read as knock
  • Poor shield or module ground raising the reference level of the whole circuit
  • Failed knock input stage in the PCM (powertrain control module)

How to fix it

  1. Record the freeze frame, then check whether the fault appears only at certain rpm ranges, which hints at induced noise rather than a dead sensor
  2. Inspect the sensor harness routing; keep it away from ignition components and repair any melted or chafed insulation
  3. Backprobe the signal circuit with the key on and engine off to see if battery voltage is present, which would confirm a short to power
  4. Compare the live signal of knock sensor 3 against the other knock sensor at idle and at steady rpm; a channel that is always high stands out
  5. Loosen and retorque the sensor to specification on a clean surface, then clear the code and retest
  6. Check nearby brackets, heat shields and the accessory drive for mechanical noise the sensor could report as knock
  7. Replace knock sensor 3 if the high reading follows the sensor; consider the module only after the harness proves clean
