Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read all stored codes; if misfire faults are present, deal with the cause of the misfire before chasing this code

  • PPowertrain
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 3Powertrain (Other)
  • 36Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1336 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Crankshaft Speed Fluctuation Sensor Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on, often together with misfire codes for one or several cylinders
  • Slightly unstable idle or a periodic shudder that comes and goes
  • Hesitation and uneven pull during light acceleration
  • Misfire counters that look active even though the engine seems to run acceptably
  • On some vehicles the misfire monitor stops running, so emissions readiness will not complete

Likely causes

  • The crankshaft segment adaptation has never been performed or was lost after a battery, module or sensor change
  • Reluctor ring tooth damage, casting flash or a slightly bent trigger wheel producing uneven segment times
  • CKP sensor with a weak or noisy output, or an incorrect air gap
  • Cracked flexplate or flywheel, or loose crank pulley hardware, which creates real speed irregularity
  • Electrical noise coupled into the sensor circuit from ignition components or a damaged shield
  • Genuine mechanical irregularity such as low compression on one cylinder or a leaking injector
  • Outdated module software on vehicles where this monitor is known to be calibration sensitive

How to fix it

  1. Read all stored codes; if misfire faults are present, deal with the cause of the misfire before chasing this code
  2. Check service history for a recent sensor, battery or module change and run the crankshaft segment adaptation routine with a capable scan tool
  3. Inspect the CKP sensor tip and connector, and verify the air gap and mounting are correct
  4. Scope the crank signal and look for irregular pulse spacing that repeats once per revolution, which points at the trigger wheel
  5. Perform a relative compression or cylinder contribution test to rule out a mechanically weak cylinder
  6. Inspect the flexplate or flywheel and crank pulley for cracks, loose bolts or movement
  7. Replace the CKP sensor only if the signal is proven poor, then repeat the adaptation and confirm the monitor completes
