Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Compare the sensor value on the scan tool with a manifold gauge reading

What does it mean?

P1461 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/C Pressure Sensor Circuit High Input .

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Compressor does not engage, or shuts off almost immediately after engaging
  • No cold air from the vents
  • Cooling fans may run continuously or fail to come on with the A/C request
  • Scan tool shows A/C pressure stuck at the top of its range even with the engine off

Likely causes

  • Open in the A/C pressure sensor signal or ground circuit, which pushes the input up to reference voltage
  • Signal wire shorted to the 5-volt reference or to another voltage source
  • Corroded or water-contaminated connector at the pressure transducer
  • Genuinely high system pressure from an overcharged system, a blocked condenser or a cooling fan that is not running
  • Pressure transducer failed internally open
  • Harness damage where it routes past the condenser and is exposed to stones and road spray
  • PCM analog input fault, only after the wiring has been checked

How to fix it

  1. Compare the sensor value on the scan tool with a manifold gauge reading
  2. Inspect and clean the transducer connector, checking for moisture and spread terminals
  3. Back-probe the signal wire; a value locked near reference voltage points to an open ground or open signal
  4. Briefly jumper the signal pin to ground at the connector: if the reading drops to zero, the wiring and module are good and the sensor is at fault
  5. Verify the 5-volt reference and the sensor ground are within specification
  6. Confirm real system pressure and condenser airflow before replacing anything
  7. Replace the pressure transducer if the circuit tests good, recovering and recharging refrigerant as required
