Evap Emission Control Sys Leak Detected (Gross Leak/No Flow)

Jump to the fix

Severity

Low

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable; have it fixed at the first opportunity.

First step

Fit manifold gauges and check static pressure with the engine off to see whether the charge is actually low

What does it mean?

P1462 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Air Conditioning Pressure (A/CP) Sensor Low Voltage Detected .

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Compressor never engages, so only ambient temperature air comes from the vents
  • Scan tool shows near zero pressure regardless of engine state
  • A/C may work for a short time and then quit
  • Cooling fan behaviour changes, because fan staging is tied to A/C pressure

Likely causes

  • A/C pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to ground or to the sensor return line
  • Loss of the 5-volt reference feeding the transducer, from an open or a short
  • Refrigerant charge very low or completely lost through a leak, so real pressure sits below the measuring range
  • Pressure transducer shorted internally
  • Harness chafed at the condenser or fan shroud
  • Corroded pins in the sensor connector pulling the signal low
  • Module reference output fault

How to fix it

  1. Fit manifold gauges and check static pressure with the engine off to see whether the charge is actually low
  2. Check for the 5-volt reference at the sensor connector with the key on
  3. Unplug the sensor: if the voltage jumps back to reference, the transducer is internally shorted
  4. Inspect the harness along the condenser for chafing and a signal wire grounded against metal
  5. Test the sensor ground circuit for excessive voltage drop
  6. Leak test and recharge the system if refrigerant is low, then re-evaluate the code
  7. Replace the transducer once the wiring has been proven sound
