SCAIR Solenoid Circuit Malfunction

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Find the source of the positive voltage first:

  • PPowertrain
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 5Powertrain (Other)
  • 29Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1529 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Camshaft Control Circuit Short to B+ .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on with a rough idle
  • Solenoid effectively energised all the time, so camshaft timing sticks in one position
  • Loss of torque and a hesitant response when accelerating
  • Rattle on start-up from the timing drive
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Fault returns quickly after the code is cleared

Likely causes

  • Control wire shorted to a positive feed where insulation has rubbed or melted near hot components
  • Corrosion inside the solenoid connector bridging the supply pin to the control pin
  • Internal short between the winding and the supply side of the solenoid
  • Incorrect wiring or a poor splice made during a previous repair
  • Damaged harness after work on the cylinder head, coils or timing cover
  • Module driver that can no longer pull the output low

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the solenoid, switch the ignition on with no command and measure the control pin to ground
  2. Unplug the module connector too; if battery voltage is still present, the short is in the harness
  3. Inspect the harness where it passes exhaust components, the alternator feed and ignition wiring for melted insulation
  4. Check the connector for corrosion and for leakage between the pins
  5. Measure the winding resistance and check for continuity between the winding and the solenoid body
  6. Repair the harness and replace a damaged connector
  7. Replace the camshaft control solenoid if it is internally shorted, then verify cam angle response in live data
