Invalid Test - Accelerator Pedal Movement

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Look for the break in the circuit, working from the component back:

  • PPowertrain
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 5Powertrain (Other)
  • 31Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1531 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Camshaft Control Circuit Open .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on with camshaft timing held at its default position
  • Loss of torque, most obvious when pulling away and in the mid range
  • Rough or slightly shaky idle
  • Rattling noise at start-up
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • No solenoid click when it should be commanded

Likely causes

  • Open winding inside the camshaft control solenoid
  • Connector not fully latched, or a terminal pushed back out of its housing
  • Broken wire in the harness between the module and the solenoid
  • Blown fuse or missing supply voltage to the solenoid
  • Corroded terminals with high resistance after water ingress
  • Poor ground connection for the actuator circuit
  • Module output stage failure as the final possibility

How to fix it

  1. Check that the connector is properly latched and the terminals are fully seated
  2. Measure the solenoid winding resistance; an infinite reading confirms an open coil
  3. With the ignition on, check for supply voltage at the connector and continuity on the control wire back to the module
  4. Check the relevant fuse and its holder for corrosion
  5. Wiggle-test the harness while measuring resistance to catch an intermittent break
  6. Repair the harness or replace the camshaft control solenoid if the winding is open
  7. Command the solenoid after the repair and confirm the camshaft angle follows the command
