Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Check the engine oil level and condition first, because low or dirty oil is a frequent trigger for this circuit

  • 69Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1569 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Variable Timing Control System Circuit Low Input .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on with the fault stored under load or at higher rpm
  • Rough idle and a loss of pulling power in the mid range
  • Rattle or a short knocking noise from the front of the engine on start-up
  • Increased fuel consumption and duller throttle response
  • Engine may run acceptably at idle but feel flat when the timing should advance
  • Additional camshaft timing correlation codes may appear at the same time

Likely causes

  • Oil control valve (variable timing solenoid) winding shorted internally
  • Control wire chafed against the cylinder head or a bracket and shorted to ground
  • Oil contamination in the solenoid connector, which is very common on this circuit
  • Loss of the supply feed to the solenoid because of a blown fuse or a corroded terminal
  • Clogged oil control valve screen or sludge in the oil galleries, so the actuator cannot respond as commanded
  • Low or degraded engine oil that prevents the cam phaser from moving
  • Damaged solenoid driver inside the PCM

How to fix it

  1. Check the engine oil level and condition first, because low or dirty oil is a frequent trigger for this circuit
  2. Unplug the oil control valve and inspect the connector for oil, corrosion and spread terminals
  3. Measure the solenoid winding resistance and compare it against the specified value
  4. Test the control wire for a short to ground with the module and the solenoid disconnected
  5. Command the solenoid with a scan tool while watching the actual camshaft position change in live data
  6. Remove the solenoid and clean or replace the filter screen if it is blocked with sludge
  7. Replace the oil control valve if it fails testing, then clear the code and verify cam advance under load
