A/C Pressure Sensor Voltage Too High

Jump to the fix

Severity

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Connect manifold gauges to the system and compare the real pressures with the value shown in live data

What does it mean?

P1598 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/C Pressure Sensor Circuit High Input .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on and the air conditioning compressor refusing to engage
  • Weak or no cold air from the vents
  • Cooling fans running at high speed continuously, even when the engine is cold
  • Compressor cutting in and out repeatedly instead of running steadily
  • Idle speed does not rise as it normally would when the air conditioning is switched on
  • Increased fuel consumption from the fans running constantly

Likely causes

  • Signal wire shorted to battery voltage or to the 5 V reference in a damaged connector
  • Open sensor ground, which lets the signal climb to the top of its range
  • Genuinely excessive refrigerant pressure caused by overcharging the system
  • Blocked condenser fins or a cooling fan that is not running, so head pressure rises
  • Internally failed pressure sensor stuck at maximum output
  • Corroded connector at the sensor, which is mounted in an exposed position on the high pressure line
  • Faulty sensor input circuit inside the control module

How to fix it

  1. Connect manifold gauges to the system and compare the real pressures with the value shown in live data
  2. Unplug the sensor and watch how the live data value responds, which separates a wiring fault from a sensor fault
  3. Measure the 5 V reference and the sensor ground at the harness connector with the ignition on
  4. Test the signal wire for a short to voltage with both ends disconnected
  5. Check the condenser for blocked fins, debris and bent cooling fan blades, and confirm the fans run when commanded
  6. Correct the refrigerant charge if the system is genuinely overfilled, using proper recovery equipment
  7. Replace the sensor once the wiring and system pressure are proven correct, then clear the code and verify the compressor engages
