What does it mean?
P1600 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Internal Control Module Random Access Memory (RAM) Error .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, frequently with several unrelated codes stored at the same time
- Learned adaptation values reset, so idle quality and shift behaviour deteriorate
- Engine stalls at random, or cranks without starting
- Scan tool struggles to communicate with the module, or communication drops out
- Vehicle enters limp mode with reduced power
- Fault returns immediately after being cleared
Likely causes
- Unstable supply voltage or a weak battery, which corrupts memory during cranking
- Poor or corroded module ground connection, creating a voltage offset inside the module
- Water ingress into the module housing or into its connector
- Interrupted or failed programming session that left the memory in an inconsistent state
- Voltage spike from a careless jump start, welding on the vehicle or disconnecting the battery with the engine running
- Corroded or spread terminals in the module connector causing intermittent supply
- Genuine internal hardware failure of the module
How to fix it
- Test the battery and charging system first, because unstable voltage is a common trigger for internal memory faults
- Clean and tighten the module ground points and check them with a voltage drop test
- Inspect the module connector and the module housing for moisture, corrosion and green deposits
- Check the supply and ignition feeds at the module with the ignition on and during cranking
- Clear the code, carry out a full drive cycle and see whether the fault returns, since a one-off event can be caused by a voltage spike
- Reprogram the module with the latest calibration using a stable power supply throughout the procedure
- Replace and program the module only when it continues to fail after the supply, ground and connector have all been repaired
