What does it mean?
P1603 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Internal Control Module Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on, and the code frequently returns as soon as it is cleared
- Several unrelated fault codes stored at the same time
- Engine goes into limp mode with reduced power
- Intermittent or complete loss of scan tool communication with the module
- Random stalling, hard starting or a no-start
- Lost adaptations, unstable idle and generally poor drivability
Likely causes
- Supply voltage problems: repeated low voltage, or a spike from jump starting or welding on the vehicle
- Poor or corroded module grounds
- Water ingress into the module case or its connector, often where the module sits low in the vehicle
- A shorted external actuator loading and damaging an internal stage
- Programming interrupted part way, leaving corrupted software
- Heat and vibration damage to internal memory or solder joints over time
- Aftermarket tuning boxes, alarm wiring or immobilizer bypass work spliced into the module harness
How to fix it
- Scan every module, record freeze frame data and note whether the code returns immediately after clearing
- Test the battery and charging system first, since low or unstable voltage produces false internal faults
- Voltage-drop test the module supply and ground circuits under load
- Open and inspect the module connector and case for moisture, corrosion and green deposits; check for water leaks where the module is mounted
- Rule out a shorted output: disconnect suspect injectors, coils and solenoids one at a time and see if the code still sets
- Check the software level and reflash with the current calibration, using a stable power supply
- Replace and program the module only when supply, ground and external circuits are all proven good
