Fuel Pump Speed Control Circuit Malfunction

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read the ABS/stability module's own fault memory first; that is exactly what this code is asking you to do

  • PPowertrain
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 6Powertrain (Other)
  • 53Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1653 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Please Check DTC Memory of the ABS Control Module .

Symptoms

  • MIL on together with ABS and stability control warning lamps
  • Traction and stability control disabled, and no anti-lock action during hard braking
  • Speedometer or trip computer readings behaving oddly on some vehicles
  • Transmission shifting harshly because it no longer trusts wheel speed data
  • Codes visible in the ABS module when it is scanned separately

Likely causes

  • A genuine fault stored in the ABS/stability module, most often a wheel speed sensor circuit
  • Damaged reluctor ring, or debris and rust on a wheel speed sensor tip
  • ABS pump motor or valve solenoid fault inside the hydraulic unit
  • Low brake fluid or a faulty brake light switch upsetting the stability system
  • Poor power or ground supply to the ABS module, or an internal module fault
  • Weak battery causing spurious ABS faults during cranking
  • ABS module replaced without coding, or a communication problem with the engine module

How to fix it

  1. Read the ABS/stability module's own fault memory first; that is exactly what this code is asking you to do
  2. Work through the ABS codes by priority, starting with wheel speed sensor circuits, which are the most common
  3. Compare all four wheel speed values on live data during a slow drive and look for one that drops out
  4. Inspect the wheel speed sensor connectors, cables and reluctor rings for rust, debris, cracks and wheel bearing play
  5. Check battery condition and the ABS module power and ground with voltage-drop tests
  6. Clear both fault memories, road test, and see which code returns first
  7. Repair, replace and code the ABS module only after sensors, wiring and supply are proven good
