What does it mean?
P1656 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: PCM To VSA Unit Signal Line Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL on together with VSA/traction and ABS warning lamps
- Stability and traction control disabled; engine torque is not reduced when a wheel spins
- Brake pedal feel is normal but there is no stability intervention in corners
- Matching codes stored in the VSA unit when it is scanned
- Cruise control may refuse to engage
Likely causes
- Open, shorted or high-resistance signal wire between the PCM and the VSA unit
- Corroded or backed-out pins at the PCM or VSA connector
- Poor grounds shared by the two units
- Harness damage where the wire runs near a wheel arch or passes through a bulkhead grommet
- Internal failure of the VSA modulator control unit
- Low battery voltage or a poor battery terminal connection
- A unit replaced without the required initialization or sensor calibration
How to fix it
- Read codes in both the engine module and the VSA unit and note which side reports the failure
- Unplug and inspect both connectors for green corrosion, moisture and terminals that have lost tension
- Test the signal wire for continuity and for shorts to ground and to battery positive
- Voltage-drop test power and ground at the VSA unit and confirm battery condition
- Back-probe the signal line while an assistant moves the harness to catch an intermittent break
- Repair the damaged harness section and clear both memories before a road test
- Replace and initialize the VSA unit only after the wiring is proven good
