What does it mean?
P1654 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Please Check DTC Memory of the Control Panel ECU .
Symptoms
- MIL on plus, in most cases, buttons or the display on the control panel dead or only partly working
- Climate or vehicle setting functions do not respond to inputs
- Panel backlighting flickers or stays off
- Scan tool reports codes inside the control panel module, or cannot reach it at all
- Sometimes only a stored code with no visible symptom for the driver
Likely causes
- A genuine fault stored inside the control panel module itself
- Blown fuse or a lost power/ground feed to the panel
- Communication line to the panel open, shorted or with a broken shield
- Liquid spilled into the panel, or heat and vibration damage to its circuit board
- Corroded or bent pins at the panel connector
- Panel module replaced without the required coding
- Low system voltage from a weak battery upsetting module communication
How to fix it
- Read the control panel module's own fault memory; this code exists to send you there
- Check the fuse feeding the panel and measure its power and ground at the connector
- Unplug the panel and inspect the connector and board for liquid damage, corrosion and bent pins
- Test the communication line to the panel for continuity and for shorts to ground and battery voltage
- Verify battery and charging voltage, since low voltage produces communication faults
- Clear the codes and recheck after a drive cycle to separate a stored history fault from an active one
- Repair or replace and code the control panel module only after supply and wiring checks
