What does it mean?
P1770 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Differential Lock Solenoid No. 1 Circuit Malfunction (Shift Solenoid Valve SLD) .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) is on, and the differential lock or four-wheel-drive indicator flashes or stays lit
- The lock will not engage when requested, or will not release once engaged
- Binding, hopping or a fighting feel in tight turns if the lock is stuck engaged
- Noticeably poor traction on loose or slippery surfaces
- Related transmission or transfer case codes stored alongside
- Clunking from underneath when attempting to change modes
Likely causes
- Solenoid coil open or shorted, resistance outside specification
- Corroded or mud-packed connector at the transfer case or differential housing, since this circuit runs under the vehicle
- Underbody harness chafed against the driveshaft, a bracket or the exhaust heat shield
- Short to ground where insulation has been abraded against the housing
- Debris or hardened deposits stopping the solenoid plunger from moving
- Broken supply or ground feed to the solenoid connector
- Failed driver output in the controlling module
How to fix it
- Inspect the underbody harness and the solenoid connector for rub damage, mud packing and water intrusion
- Measure solenoid resistance at the connector and check for a short to the housing
- Command the solenoid with a scan tool and listen or feel for the plunger click
- Check supply voltage and ground quality at the solenoid connector while the solenoid is commanded on
- Verify the hydraulic or pneumatic supply on systems that use one, since a mechanical restriction can look electrical
- Repair the wiring first; replace the solenoid only after the harness is proven, then clear the code and road test in both modes
