What does it mean?
P1777 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Step Motor Circuit .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) is on and the transmission runs in a restricted, limited-ratio limp mode
- Poor acceleration with engine speed that does not match road speed
- Jerky, delayed or completely unresponsive shifts
- On some vehicles the car will not move at all or only creeps
- A buzzing, ticking or grinding noise from the actuator area
- The fault may return immediately after clearing, or only under load
Likely causes
- One of the stepper motor coil phases open or shorted internally
- Corroded, wet or bent pins at the step motor connector
- Broken or chafed wire in the multi-wire harness between the control module and the motor
- Mechanical binding in the mechanism the motor drives, so it stalls and loses steps
- Wear or debris in the actuator assembly increasing the required torque
- Low system voltage or a poor module ground weakening the drive pulses
- Failed stepper driver stage in the control module
How to fix it
- Inspect the step motor connector and harness for corrosion, water ingress and rub damage
- Measure the resistance of each coil phase and check every phase for a short to ground
- Command the actuator with a scan tool and watch the position feedback follow the command
- Measure supply voltage and ground quality at the connector while the motor is being driven
- Where accessible, check that the mechanism moves freely by hand with the motor removed
- Replace the step motor once the wiring is proven, then run the calibration or relearn procedure and road test
