What does it mean?
P1812 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction Upper Threshold .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on, sometimes with ABS or stability system warnings
- Speedometer needle jumping, over-reading or behaving erratically
- Very early or very harsh upshifts because the module thinks road speed is higher than it is
- Cruise control refuses to set or drops out on its own
- Limp mode, single-gear operation and clearly degraded drivability
Likely causes
- Signal wire shorted to a voltage source where the loom runs near the case, the tunnel or a heat shield
- Electrical noise coupling into an unshielded or previously repaired signal wire, often after an accessory was spliced into the loom
- Corroded or wet terminals in the sensor connector creating leakage between pins
- Damaged or contaminated reluctor ring giving extra pulses per revolution
- Sensor breaking down internally under heat and producing a ragged output
- Poor sensor or module ground shifting the signal reference upward
- Wrong sensor or an incorrect final drive calibration fitted after a repair
How to fix it
- Read the codes and freeze frame, then compare the scan tool speed value with an independent road speed reference on a test drive
- Inspect the sensor connector and loom for fluid, corrosion, chafe and any non-factory splices near the signal wire
- Test the signal wire for a short to battery voltage with the connector unplugged and the key on
- Check the sensor and module ground circuits for resistance and clean the ground points
- Remove the sensor and inspect its tip and the reluctor ring for debris, chipped teeth and scoring
- Wiggle-test the harness while graphing output speed to catch an intermittent spike
- Replace the sensor once the wiring is clear, and verify the correct part and calibration for the axle ratio
