What does it mean?
P1818 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/T Manual Shaft Shift Switch Circuit Malfunction (5L40-E) .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on with a wrong or blank gear position indicator
- Starter operates in a range where it should not, or refuses to crank in Park and Neutral
- Reverse lamps on continuously or working in the wrong position
- Harsh engagement into Drive or Reverse and default high-gear starts
- Limp mode with the transmission locked in one gear
Likely causes
- Range wire shorted to battery voltage where the loom passes the case, a stud or a heat source
- Two range circuits shorted together inside a corroded connector, so more than one position reads active
- Worn switch contacts bridging adjacent tracks internally
- Manual shaft or shift cable adjustment off, leaving the switch between detents
- Moisture or transmission fluid inside the switch body
- Failed switch assembly
- Module driver or input circuit damaged after a long-standing short
How to fix it
- Read the codes and watch the range parameter on the scan tool as the selector moves through every position
- Verify shift cable and manual shaft adjustment before any electrical testing
- Unplug the switch and check whether the fault stays; a code that remains with the switch disconnected points at the harness
- Test each range wire for a short to battery voltage and for a short to the neighbouring circuit
- Inspect the connector for fluid, corrosion, spread terminals and a cracked seal
- Repair the harness where damage is found, then retest the range readings through the full sweep
- Replace the switch only when adjustment and wiring are both proven good
