What does it mean?
P1817 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/T Input Shaft Speed Sensor Malfunction (4T40-E/4T45-E) .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on, sometimes intermittently and with other speed sensor codes stored
- Shifts that are sometimes normal and sometimes harsh or delayed for no clear reason
- Occasional rpm flare on the 1-2 or 2-3 change
- Torque converter clutch dropping out and re-applying while cruising
- Brief limp mode episodes that clear after a restart
Likely causes
- Intermittent open inside the sensor that appears with heat, vibration or in a particular gear
- Loose terminal tension in the sensor connector letting the pin break contact over bumps
- Harness chafed against the case, a bracket or an exhaust component causing momentary shorts
- Excessive air gap from a partially seated sensor or a missing spacer
- Contaminated fluid depositing debris on the sensor tip
- Cracked or worn tone ring giving an unstable pulse count
- Weak module ground shared with other transmission sensors
How to fix it
- Read the freeze frame and note speed, load and fluid temperature at the moment of the fault
- Graph input speed, output speed and engine rpm together on a road test and look for momentary dropouts
- Wiggle-test the harness and connector while watching the live signal, both cold and at full operating temperature
- Inspect the connector terminals for tension and corrosion, and check the harness routing for chafe points
- Verify sensor resistance both cold and hot, since a failing winding often only opens when warm
- Check the shared sensor ground for resistance and clean the connection
- Replace the sensor after the wiring is proven, then repeat the same drive conditions to confirm the fix
