What does it mean?
P1821 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Shift Fork Position Sensor 1 System (Voltage High Range Out) .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on with a transmission warning and often a gearbox fault message
- The vehicle refuses to select a gear, or drops into neutral and stays there
- Very rough, noisy or clunky engagement when a gear does go in
- Only a limited set of gears remains available
- The car will not move at all in the worst case
Likely causes
- Open sensor ground or a break in the return path, which drives the signal to full reference voltage
- Signal wire shorted to the 5 V reference or to another supply inside the loom
- Water or oil ingress in the actuator connector corroding the pins
- Sensor internally failed with a broken resistive track or a damaged position element
- Shift fork or selector shaft binding and pushing the sensor past its designed travel
- Actuator unit or mechatronic assembly fault holding the fork out of position
- Module supply or reference circuit fault affecting several sensors at once
How to fix it
- Read all transmission codes; several sensors reading high together point at a shared reference or ground fault
- Inspect the actuator connector for water, oil and corroded terminals, and check the loom for chafe near the bell housing
- With the key on, measure the reference voltage and the ground at the sensor connector
- Watch the fork position value live while the selector is operated and compare it with the commanded position
- Test the signal wire for continuity and for shorts to the reference or supply circuits
- Check that the fork and selector shaft move freely and are not binding or bent
- Replace the sensor or the actuator assembly as the tests indicate, then carry out any required position learn procedure
