What does it mean?
P1828 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Shift Fork Position Sensor 2 System (Neutral) .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp and gearbox warning on together
- The gearbox slips into neutral while driving and refuses to take a gear
- Loud clunking or grinding when a gear finally engages
- Only some gears remain usable, others are blocked out
- Vehicle stationary and unable to move in the worst case
Likely causes
- Hydraulic or electric actuator unable to move the fork out of the neutral position
- Low system pressure or a leaking actuator circuit in an automated manual gearbox
- Sensor signal out of calibration after a clutch, actuator or gearbox repair with no relearn carried out
- Selector fork, shaft or synchroniser worn, bent or binding so the fork stalls midway
- Connector corrosion or a chafed wire distorting the sensor reading
- Sensor internally failed and stuck at its neutral output value
- Mechatronic or control unit fault leaving the fork uncommanded
How to fix it
- Read all gearbox codes and note whether other fork or pressure codes are stored alongside
- Compare the commanded fork position with the actual value on the scan tool while gears are selected
- Check the gearbox fluid level and, on hydraulic systems, the accumulator pressure and any external leaks
- Inspect the actuator connector and loom for water, oil and chafe
- Measure the sensor supply, ground and signal at the connector, and check the wiring for opens and shorts
- Run the manufacturer position and clutch learn routines, which cure many faults after a repair
- Only after that inspect the fork and shaft mechanically, and replace the sensor or actuator unit as required
