What does it mean?
P1826 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/T Manual Shaft Shift Switch Invalid Signal (5L40-E) .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on with the gear display flickering between letters or showing dashes
- No-crank or crank-in-gear behaviour depending on which tracks overlap
- Reverse lamps illuminating in the wrong range
- Harsh, delayed or wrong-gear engagement
- Limp mode with the unit locked into a default gear
Likely causes
- Two range circuits shorted together in a corroded or fluid-filled connector
- Switch contacts worn so adjacent tracks overlap and report two ranges at once
- Manual shaft or cable badly out of adjustment, leaving the switch between detents
- Harness chafed against the case so two wires touch each other
- Selector cable stretched or its bushing collapsed, so the shaft stops short of the detent
- Failed switch assembly with an internal short between tracks
- Module input circuit fault after long-term damage
How to fix it
- Read the codes and observe the range parameter while the selector moves slowly through every detent
- Check the shift cable, bushing and manual shaft adjustment, and confirm the shaft reaches each detent fully
- Inspect the switch connector for fluid, corrosion and pin-to-pin leakage paths
- Disconnect the switch and check for continuity between range circuits, which should be isolated from each other
- Test the harness between switch and module for wire-to-wire shorts
- Adjust or realign the switch and retest before replacing it
- Fit a new switch if the tracks are worn, then confirm one and only one range reads active in each detent
