What does it mean?
P1829 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Shift Fork Position Sensor 2 System (Poor performance) .
Symptoms
- Check engine lamp on with an intermittent gearbox warning
- Slow, hesitant gear changes with a long pause between gears
- Jerky take-up and occasional grinding on engagement
- Some shifts refused, with the gearbox holding the previous gear
- Uneven performance that is worse when the gearbox is cold
Likely causes
- Worn sensor element giving a noisy or stepped output across its travel
- Fork or selector shaft dragging because of wear, a bent rod or a dry bearing
- Actuator losing pressure or force, so the fork moves late and lazily
- Contaminated or low gearbox fluid slowing hydraulic response
- High resistance in the sensor connector or a partly broken wire strand
- Adaptation values out of date after clutch wear or a previous repair
- Mechatronic unit valve sticking and delaying fork movement
How to fix it
- Read the codes and record the fork position trace while commanding shifts with the scan tool
- Compare commanded versus actual position and note how long the fork takes to reach target
- Check fluid level and condition, and on hydraulic systems verify system pressure and look for leaks
- Inspect the connector and wiring for corrosion, high resistance and chafe, and wiggle-test while graphing the signal
- Run the adaptation and position learn procedures, then retest the trace
- Inspect the fork, shaft and bearings for wear, binding and bent components
- Replace the sensor or the actuator assembly once the mechanical and hydraulic side is proven, then relearn
