What does it mean?
P1881 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: 1-2 Shift Range Monitoring Upper Threshold . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- Long, soft 1-2 shift with the engine rpm flaring before the gear takes hold
- On some vehicles the opposite: a harsh, banging 1-2 shift
- Hesitation or a lurch when pulling away from a standstill
- Malfunction indicator lamp on and possible default (limp) operation
- Burnt fluid smell if the slipping has been going on for a while
- Shift quality changes with fluid temperature — often worse when hot
Likely causes
- Worn 1-2 clutch or band no longer holding during the shift
- Low line pressure from a tired pump, worn pressure control solenoid or internal leakage
- Sticking or slow 1-2 shift solenoid
- Degraded, contaminated or incorrect-specification transmission fluid
- Worn valve body bores bleeding off apply pressure
- Adaptive shift values corrupted or not relearned after repair or a battery disconnect
- Input or output speed sensor signal errors distorting the ratio calculation
How to fix it
- Check fluid level, colour and smell with the transmission at operating temperature
- Log input speed, output speed and calculated ratio through several 1-2 shifts on a road test
- Measure shift time in live data and compare with what the vehicle does when cold and hot
- Carry out a line pressure test where a tap is available
- Inspect the pan, filter and magnet for friction material or metal particles
- Reset and relearn the adaptive shift values if the fault appeared after a repair or battery work
- Replace the shift or pressure control solenoid if pressure control is at fault; plan internal repair if the clutch is worn
