What does it mean?
P1883 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Select Stroke Sensor Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Transmission warning and malfunction indicator lamp on together
- Gear selection is refused, or the gearbox picks the wrong gate
- Long pauses between gears, or the shift never completes
- Gearbox falls into neutral and will not take a gear
- Reduced-speed limp operation with a restricted set of gears
- Symptoms often come and go with temperature or vibration
Likely causes
- Sensor element worn or internally open, giving a jumping or dead signal
- Damaged wiring between the gearbox and the TCM: chafe, short or broken strand
- Water or gear oil in the connector on the transmission housing
- Terminals spread or corroded so the contact is intermittent
- Selector actuator binding, keeping the shaft short of its target gate
- Adaptation values lost after a battery disconnect or module replacement
- TCM input stage failure
How to fix it
- Read stored and pending codes from the transmission module and note the freeze frame
- Move the selector through every position while graphing the select stroke signal in live data
- Wiggle-test the gearbox connector and the harness section that flexes with the engine while monitoring
- Check reference voltage and ground quality at the sensor connector
- Verify the actuator and linkage move without binding through the full select travel
- Perform the required calibration; recheck the signal before condemning parts
- Replace the sensor or actuator assembly only when wiring, mechanics and calibration have been proven good
