What does it mean?
P3495 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 12 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit Low . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- Check engine light (MIL) on, sometimes together with low-side codes for adjacent cylinders
- Uneven idle and a misfire-like shake because cylinder 12 stays in one valve mode
- Loss of power and poor throttle response through the mid range
- Higher fuel consumption
- The solenoid may buzz or stay energised continuously
- A blown fuse on the actuator supply circuit in the case of a hard short
Likely causes
- Short to ground in the control wire, typically where the harness rubs on the cam cover, a bracket or an engine lifting eye
- Internally shorted exhaust valve control solenoid with a collapsed winding
- Moisture, coolant or oil in the connector creating a low resistance path to earth
- Crushed or pinched harness section from a previous cam cover or ignition coil repair
- Loss of the supply voltage side so the PCM reads the circuit as permanently low
- Terminal fretting inside the connector causing an intermittent short under vibration
- Shorted PCM output driver holding the circuit low
How to fix it
- Check the fuse feeding the valve control solenoids before anything else; a blown fuse points directly at a hard short
- Inspect the harness where it passes over the cam cover and near hot or moving parts for rub-through
- Disconnect the solenoid connector and see whether the code changes state, which separates a shorted component from shorted wiring
- With the solenoid unplugged, measure resistance from the control wire to ground; a low reading confirms a short to ground
- Measure the solenoid winding resistance and compare it with the other cylinders; a low reading means an internal short
- Dry and clean the connector, check for water tracking and reseal the harness entry
- Repair the shorted section of wire properly with sealed joints, then clear the code and command the actuator with the scan tool
- Only after wiring and solenoid test correct should the PCM output driver be evaluated
