What does it mean?

P3496 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 12 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit High . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light (MIL) on and the fault often returns immediately after clearing
  • Cylinder 12 stays locked in one valve mode, giving a rough, uneven engine feel
  • Loss of top end power or a flat spot where the valve strategy would normally switch
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Scan tool actuator test for that solenoid produces no audible click or change
  • Companion P349x codes for the same cylinder group

Likely causes

  • Open circuit in the control wire so the PCM driver sees an unloaded, high reading
  • Short to battery voltage where the actuator wire runs next to a permanently live feed
  • Exhaust valve control solenoid with an open or high resistance winding
  • Loose, backed-out or corroded terminal in the solenoid or bulkhead connector
  • Poor ground on the actuator circuit that lifts the reference voltage
  • Insulation damage from heat where the harness passes near the exhaust side of the head
  • Faulty PCM driver stage, considered only after the harness and solenoid are proven

How to fix it

  1. Record the freeze frame data and check whether the code sets with the engine hot, which points at heat damaged insulation
  2. Inspect the harness on the exhaust side of the cylinder head for heat hardened or melted insulation
  3. Unplug the solenoid and, with the ignition on, check the control wire for battery voltage that should not be present
  4. Measure the solenoid resistance and compare it with a known good cylinder; an open or very high reading condemns it
  5. Check continuity from the PCM pin to the solenoid pin, and voltage drop on the supply and ground side
  6. Repair open or heat damaged wiring with high temperature rated repair material and reroute it away from the exhaust
  7. Replace the solenoid once the wiring is verified, then command the output with the scan tool and confirm the circuit switches
  8. Evaluate the PCM driver last, after both the component and the harness have been proven good
