What does it mean?
U1161 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Loss of PASS Door Module SBI .
Symptoms
- Passenger window, mirror and lock functions dead from both the passenger and the driver switches
- Window works from one switch only, or moves only in one direction
- Door ajar indication that stays on, and courtesy lamps that do not switch off
- Central locking not cycling that door while the other doors work
- Battery drain because the module or lamps stay awake
- The passenger door module missing from the scan tool module list
Likely causes
- Broken wires in the rubber boot between the body and the passenger door, fatigued by opening and closing
- Water inside the door soaking the module or its connector after the vapour barrier or drain holes failed
- Corroded or backed-out terminals in the door connector
- Blown fuse or a bad ground supplying the passenger door module
- Open or shorted bus wiring between the door module and the body control module
- Internal failure of the door module after long term moisture exposure
- Damage from previous window regulator or speaker work in the door
How to fix it
- Open and close the door while watching the module on the scan tool to see whether communication drops
- Peel back the rubber boot between the body and the door and check each wire for breaks under the insulation
- Inspect the door connector for corrosion and moisture, and check the vapour barrier and drain holes
- Measure supply voltage and ground at the door module while the circuit is loaded
- Test the bus wiring from the door module to the body control module for continuity and shorts
- Dry out the door, clear the drains and repair any leak before fitting new parts
- Replace the door module only after the wiring, supply and water path are proven good, then check window and lock initialisation
