Jump to the fix

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Get behind the rear bumper, because that is where the damage almost always is.

  • 94Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1194 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Lost Communication With Passenger Side Blind Spot Sensor .

Symptoms

  • Blind spot warning indicator in the passenger side mirror not lighting, or staying lit permanently
  • A message that the blind spot monitoring system is unavailable
  • Rear cross traffic alert not working when reversing out of a parking space
  • Both sides of the system disabled even though only one sensor is at fault
  • Warning lamps for driver assistance systems on
  • The fault appearing after bodywork, a towbar installation or bumper removal

Likely causes

  • Rear impact, bumper removal or refitting that damaged or displaced the sensor
  • Corroded or water filled connector at the sensor, since it sits low at the rear of the vehicle
  • Chafed or broken wiring in the rear quarter panel or bumper harness
  • Blown fuse, missing supply voltage or a poor ground at the sensor
  • Open or shorted communication line between this sensor and its partner sensor or the master module
  • Sensor replaced without being coded and calibrated to the vehicle
  • Internal failure of the sensor after water ingress or a heavy knock

How to fix it

  1. Scan the system and check whether the partner sensor has stored its own codes as well
  2. Remove the trim or bumper cover and inspect the passenger side sensor for impact damage, correct seating and secure mounting
  3. Unplug the connector and check for water, corrosion and damaged pins, and dry and repair as required
  4. Check the fuse and measure supply voltage and ground at the sensor under load
  5. Test the communication line between the sensor and its partner or master module for opens and shorts
  6. Inspect the rear harness for chafing and for damage from towbar or accessory wiring
  7. Replace the sensor last, then complete the coding and calibration procedure and verify the system on a road test
