SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Door Locks

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

First determine whether the engine control unit is even alive on the network.

  • UNetwork
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 1Network / Communication
  • 97Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1197 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Security Seed Response Not Received From ECM/PCM .

Symptoms

  • Engine cranks but never starts, or starts and stalls almost immediately
  • Security or immobilizer indicator illuminated or flashing
  • MIL (check engine lamp) on with communication codes stored in more than one module
  • Remote start and keyless functions disabled
  • The code returns straight away after being cleared
  • The engine control unit may not answer the scan tool at all

Likely causes

  • Engine control unit offline because of a blown fuse, a missing supply or a poor ground
  • Open or shorted bus wiring between the engine control unit and the module requesting the seed
  • Engine control unit replaced with a used or incorrect unit that is not matched to this vehicle
  • Programming or immobilizer matching not completed after a control unit replacement
  • Low battery voltage during a programming session, leaving the security data incomplete
  • Corroded terminals in the engine control unit connector or a bulkhead connector
  • Internal failure or corrupted software in the engine control unit

How to fix it

  1. Try to communicate with the engine control unit using a scan tool; if it does not answer, this is a power, ground or bus problem rather than a security problem
  2. Check the engine control unit fuses and measure supply voltage and ground at its connectors under load
  3. Test the bus wiring between the engine control unit and the requesting module for continuity, shorts and corrosion
  4. Verify battery condition and charging voltage, since low voltage regularly corrupts security programming
  5. Inspect the engine control unit and bulkhead connectors for water, green terminals and pushed-back pins
  6. If a control unit was replaced, confirm the part is correct for this vehicle and carry out the full immobilizer matching and programming procedure
  7. Only after wiring, supply and matching are proven, consider reprogramming or replacing the engine control unit, then verify normal starting over several cycles
