Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Cycle through every mode setting and note which vents actually deliver air

What does it mean?

B1239 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Open or Short in the Drivers Mode Control Motor Circuit .

Symptoms

  • Air comes out of the wrong vents, or is stuck on one setting such as defrost only
  • Pressing the mode button changes the display but not the actual airflow
  • Clicking or ratcheting noise behind the dash when the climate system is switched on
  • The windshield defrost setting cannot be selected properly
  • Airflow direction may change by itself while driving

Likely causes

  • Open or shorted wiring between the mode control actuator and the climate control module
  • Failed actuator motor or a worn feedback potentiometer inside the mode motor
  • Mode door binding or its linkage broken, stalling the motor and driving current up
  • Actuator connector loose, corroded, or affected by moisture
  • Harness chafed against the HVAC case or a bracket under the dash
  • Failed output stage inside the climate control module

How to fix it

  1. Cycle through every mode setting and note which vents actually deliver air
  2. Command the mode actuator with a scan tool and compare the commanded and actual positions
  3. Unplug the actuator and check the control circuits for drive voltage, continuity, and shorts to ground or battery
  4. Measure the actuator motor and feedback potentiometer resistance out of circuit
  5. Remove the actuator and verify the mode door and linkage move freely by hand
  6. Repair the wiring or replace the mode actuator as indicated, then run the climate calibration routine
