What does it mean?
B1499 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: SRS-ECU air bag condition monitor detects deployed air bag .
Symptoms
- Airbag warning lamp on permanently and the code cannot be cleared
- Entire restraint system disabled, so nothing would deploy in a further crash
- Seat belt on the affected side locked, shortened or noticeably stiff
- Signs of a previous impact such as replaced trim, painted panels or a cut and taped harness
Likely causes
- An airbag, curtain or belt pretensioner has actually fired and was never replaced
- Vehicle repaired after a collision with only the visible devices renewed, leaving a fired pretensioner in place
- Airbag control module retains stored crash data and has locked itself out
- Used airbag control module fitted from another vehicle that already holds crash data
- Deployed loop simulated incorrectly with a bypass resistor or a non matching replacement part
- Seat belt pretensioner fired in a low speed impact and overlooked because the airbags did not deploy
How to fix it
- Read all stored restraint codes and any crash data record before touching anything
- Physically inspect every pyrotechnic device: driver and passenger airbags, side and curtain bags, and all belt pretensioners
- Check the belts by pulling them out fully; a fired pretensioner is usually locked or will not retract normally
- Look for bypass resistors or hacked wiring left behind by a previous repair and remove them
- Replace every deployed device with the correct new part, never with used units of unknown history
- Replace or properly service the airbag control module, since many modules cannot be reset once crash data is stored
- Re-scan the system, confirm the lamp completes its self-test and goes out, and verify no codes return
